{Spotlight Project} Maria Combines Watercolor and Grawlix

A little background to the post title...

When Country Rustic came out and I saw the outhouse, (mind you, I grew up using one for years while my Dad built our summer home) a baby bib came to mind which I had gifted BFF when she had her first child. It was pink and cute. And had "spit happens" embroidered on it ;) I probably bought it cuz it brought to mind another phrase that I've been known to use ;) But I wasn't sure that I could really use that phrase on a card. Nah.

So then along comes Sketchy Alphabet with all its extra punctuation marks and bingo! Enter Grawlix... and "%#?! Happens"

STEP 1
I gathered my supplies - the Country Rustic and Sketchy Alphabet sets, some watercolor paper and watercolors.

STEP 2
I stamped the outhouse image with Antique Linen Distress Ink onto a die cut circle of watercolor paper to do no-line watercoloring.

STEP 3
I painted over the outline and shading lines with dark brown watercolor.

STEP 4
I filled in the other areas with more of the same color, but more watered down.

STEP 5
Then I used a thicker brush to apply water around the outhouse and drop in some green and blue for grass and sky. This was actually the second image I watercolored, having gotten so carried away with the first one that I forgot to photograph along the way! I ended up liking my first one better, I think I'd had a lighter hand. TIP: Less is better than more when watercoloring. You can always add more pigment if you need it.

STEP 6
Lined up my alpha stamps as I wanted them and picked them up with a large acrylic block and stamped them with brown Memento ink.

STEP 7
Went back in and stamped the missing "P". And now I have to share this LOL moment with you... Take a look at the "H". Notice anything? I adhered it upside down to my acrylic block! %#?! happens.

I decided to leave it as is, but TIP: Stamp and proofread your messages before stamping onto your finished project ;) I adhered the watercolored outhouse with foam adhesive and added some photo corners cut from woodgrain PP.

  2. Very witty and such a perfect sentiment for the stamp. Thank you for all the tips along the way and didn't notice the upside down 'H' x

  3. I love your outhouse and the sentiment. Made me laugh. Funny, I was just "reminiscing" about the bad old days recently.
