{Mixed Media Tutorial} Amp Up Your Stencils!

Hello crafters, Craftyfield here!

This Autumn I am hosting the Mixed Media feature here on the STAMPlorations blog and sharing 4 different techniques that will enhance your stencilling.

First up, the "bump" technique, which gives the impression of a shadow or highlight as in the background of this card:

Enhancing simple stencilling

It is normally used with acrylic paints, since the technique needs the medium used to be opaque.

Supplies:

To keep my card and stencil in place on my silicone sheet I use a double sided Sizzix sticky grid sheet and washi/removable tape.

For this technique you apply first the "bump" color be it the darker accent or the lighter one. Here I used ink instead of acrylic paint, which is more traditional for the technique, but only because I don't have a good violet acrylic paint. The second layer though HAS to be opaque.

Before applying the second layer reposition the stencil slightly offset. Here I shifted my stencil a bit higher and slightly left of its original position.

To finish the card I added a die-cut sentiment and a butterfly and matted my cut-to-size stencilled  background.

What if you don't have acrylic paints I hear you ask? Well, you can get good results with colored pencils used as the shadow/highlight layer but this time the pencil is only applied where the newly repositioned stencil hasn't got any color from the first step, effectively tracing one side of the stencil.

Here I used inks, blending them from yellow to orange with a dash of brown for the flower center. Having shifted my stencil right and down a tiny fraction I added pencil in violet and black to get to the final image:

I hope you like this technique and try it out, plenty of STAMPlorations stencils lend themselves to the Bump!

Join me next month for another technique!

  8. Really superb!!! Great stamps and technique!
