Hello everyone, it's Sanna here again with another mixed media tutorial. This time I created an art journal spread using a long quote.
Recently I gave the magazine transfer technique a go with my Gelli Plate and in the process of learning, how to get reasonably good results, I made quite a few pages and one of those pages was my starting point for this particular spread, as I really liked the color combination on the paper, even though the transfer image did not look that great.
Here is the finished page:
You are probably thinking, where the gelli plate paper is? Well, it is there, hidden under all the layers. You can only see very little of it on the human shaped areas.
Now to the tutorial. I've again recorded a start-to-finish video for you to watch:
Here are the steps again shortly explained:
- Adhere the gelli plate sheet onto the journal. Start applying lighter and brighter tones of acrylic paint thru the first stencil onto to background. Apply randomly with a sponge.
- Take the second stencil and apply slightly darker tones again using the sponge in random manner.
- Draw and fussy cut body shapes from white printing paper and use those as masks on your pages.
- Place the paper masks onto the page and start applying darker blue acrylic paint onto the page with a sponge until the second page is fully covered.
- Repeat the previous step, this time using black acrylic paint and work yourself thru the first page in the same manner.
- Outline the human shapes with white Posca pen. Draw red hearts with a red Posca pen and outline with a black one.
- Use the masks again and apply pink and yellow paint thru a third stencil onto the background around the shapes.
- Add a longer quote or free journaling and outline some of the leaf patterns with a white gel pen. Do this first when the paint has dried completely.
- Finish off with black and white ink splatters.
I hope you enjoyed this month's tutorial - see you again next month with another inspirational post.
