Stenciling Made Easy with Cornelia - Part II

Hi, everyone. Cornelia here today, with part II of my little stenciling class. There will be more! So let's get started!

During the first part we learned about how to lay down simple color. Now I am going to expand on this. Who says you always have to use color? You can use Versamark ink and emboss your stencil. You can add additional color to your stenciled work or you can keep things easy and stencil on patterned paper. So that's what this is going to be all about.

    

Card #1

Use Versamark and heat emboss. Pick where you want the deer on your card and mask off the rest, to not get accidentally Versamark where you don't want it. Make sure you get it into all those little nooks and crannies of your stencil and then use whatever embossing powder you want. I choose white, since it always shines on kraft. I am sparing you the image of how it looks - you can see that. Notice that I did a bit of sponging with vintage photo distress ink around the deer. This adds extra interest. I added the sentiment and some PP on the side.

I did not want to use the deer anymore - don't want to bore you....

Lets move onto flowers with Card #2 - stenciling on patterned paper

I used the Happy Flowers stencil.

The first step is always the same. Pick where you want the stencil on your card and mask off the rest. I also secured the stencil with Washi tape, to make sure it does not shift.

Then sponge. Water color would not be great, since PP is not water color paper and would warp.

I first sponged 2 of the flowers using distress inks (picked raspberry, wilted violet, Avery Elle aquamarine). I then shifted the stencil a little to the left and down, to cover some of that empty space there and sponged again. Since the colors are similar I did not clean off the stencil in between.

And that's how it looked like. If you don't want the stems to show through your flowers, you should wait until you have the flowers done and then avoid the petals or mask them (I know - should have done that...)

I finished off the card, trimming some paper off the right and adding a thin strip of violet card stock and glued it to a white card base. Added the sentiment. You see that the SMILE fades out on the bottom, but I actually like that. I could have inked it up again (used my Misti), but I decided against it. Added the rest of the sentiment and sequins.

Card #3: Adding stamping to your stencil

I placed the stencil onto white card stock. I sponged the flowers and once I was done with that I took a detailed stamp and inked it up with the same ink that I used for sponging and stamped onto the stenciled image. 

You can see that the inked up stamp has much more intense color than the sponged area. In case you got intense color with sponging you could go a shade darker with your stamping.  

Added the sentiment. Adding stamping to your stenciled images works best with large open stencils and not so well with more intricate stencils. I know - I could have used the deer for this as well.....

And this is the finished card - only added a strip of patterned paper on the side.
