{Spotlight Project} Shirley Sloshes Coordinating Backgrounds

Hi peeps! Today I'm sloshing backgrounds on my cards to match the focal images.

I started with the Thinking of You card.

I watercoloured the image from Thank You Coffee using an ink that I don't normally care for, but it's a great colour for monochromatic colouring.

Once it was dry I fussy cut it, not leaving any white space around the edges. TIP: To cut out the white waste in the handle, I cut down the black stamp line of the cup past the top of the handle, then cut out the hole, and the handle just sits back in place. You can always stick a bit of tape behind it if it's not lying flat.

Then I loaded a No.8 round brush with the ink and sloshed it on my base card. As a loose guideline I made some pencil marks where I wanted my image to be and rubbed them out afterwards.

I deliberately didn't colour the centre because (a) I didn't want to overload the card with watercolour and (b) I wanted some white to show through in places behind the cut-out image.

As it happened, the area around and behind the handle ended up white, so I needn't have cut the centre out. You can see a little white peeping through behind the rosebud stem. The sentiment is from Layered Holly.

I repeated the process with the A Cup of Roses stamp. Again, I used a colour I wouldn't normally go for.

Fussy cut the image, then watercoloured the front of my card.

And added a sentiment from Big Greetings.

Here's another look at both cards together.

And here's what I used:

  1. Great sloshing and what fabulous watercolouring and cards x.

  2. Love your fancy tea cup and I do like the color of both cards.

  3. Very pretty cards and I like the backgrounds.

  4. I really like this idea! Both cards are equally attractive. As an added bonus we might just dust off ink pads that we don’t normally reach for right away.

  5. Oh loving these monochromatic cards with the simple but effective backgrounds. Love them .
    Stay safe

  6. Interesting way to add color around the image. Will give this a try.

  7. These are beautiful! I'm going to share them in the Coffee Loving Papercrafters FB page.

  8. These look great. I am going to try that....even I can watercolor in that way because it doesn't require fine motor skills :)

  9. Shirley, these cards are so lovely. Thanks for sharing these lovely cards and your watercoloring directions. I just pulled out some watercolor paper this morning so I know that I'll be trying this before the end of the day! Be well.

  10. Love the soft wash of color behind the images. Beautiful.

  11. Oh, my!! These are just gorgeous!!! I love that technique; it looks so cool!

  12. These are beautiful. The soft wash presents the outline perfectly! Thanks and please be healthy!
