One of my favorite things about Walter's projects is that he rarely uses paper goods the way you might expect. Instead of treating them as individual elements, he layers and combines them into something entirely new.

For today's project, Walter transformed four Paper Goods VIP Subscription selections into an eye-catching mixed media collage inspired by urban wall murals. It's the kind of artwork that looks as though it belongs on the side of a brick building, where layers of paint, posters, and street art tell their own story.

Building an Urban Wall Mural

Walter selected these August Paper Goods VIP Subscription products:

He began by fussy-cutting elements from each collection and arranging them into a collage on an A2-sized cardstock panel. After adhering everything with collage paste, he embossed the entire panel using a brick embossing folder, instantly transforming the collage into a textured brick wall.

To finish the piece, Walter blended Distress Inks (Lost Shadow, Hickory Smoke, Weathered Wood, and Antique Linen), added white paint splatter, and sealed everything with a layer of collage medium. The result is wonderfully textured and convincingly resembles a weathered mural painted directly onto an old brick wall.

Creative Takeaway

One of the easiest ways to stretch your paper crafting supplies is to stop thinking of paper goods as finished pieces. Walter shows how combining several collections can create something completely original. A card front becomes street art. Ephemera becomes architectural detail. An embossing folder changes a flat collage into a realistic brick wall.

The beauty of mixed media is that every layer contributes to the story. Texture, color, dimension, and imagery all work together to create a project that's far greater than the individual pieces themselves.
