{Spotlight Project} Shirley Tries A Spot of Pointillism

Hi guys! I was looking at the different stamps in the current stamp club set, The Birds and The Blooms, and picked out the hummingbird. Now, we don't get hummingbirds in the UK, so I checked online for the colouring of their plumage, and it seems they come in every shade and colour! In some of the photos, you could see the individual feathers, so I thought I'd try a bit of pointillism to represent the feathers. See what you think.

I started off by stamping the image on a small piece of white card with Versafine Onyx Black ink.

Then using a selection of Tombow pens, I started colouring the bird by dotting the colours onto the card with the thin nib. I thought it would be really tedious but to be honest, it didn't take much longer than careful colouring does. (I normally prefer to slosh colours on; that's a really quick way of colouring!)

I added grey around the outline of the bird for a bit of depth. Then I coloured in the flower and stem using the same method.

And trimmed the panel and mounted it onto turquoise card.

I did consider using patterned paper as a background - I even found some with hummingbirds on - but in the end decided to go with splattering, because it makes me happy :)

And here's a look at the finished card again.

  4. I've never tried this technique because, like you said, it seems like it would be time-consuming. Good to know you found it didn't take too long.
