Paper Goods in Action | A Fall Thank-You Card with Walter

Sometimes a card starts with one product, and sometimes you find yourself pulling a little bit from everything. STAMPfella Walter took that second approach with this sweet autumn card, combining elements from four different STAMPlorations paper goods products to create a layered scene with a story to tell.

Let the Paper Goods Tell the Story

For this card, Walter used elements from Thank You Card Fronts, Hello Fall Journaling Cards, Newsprint Autumn Ephemera, and Framed Autumn #1 Colorables. He also added a Retro Gratitude STAMPcut as the sentiment.

The couple is clearly the focal point, surrounded by autumn details that help tell their story. Walter did quite a bit of fussy cutting to bring the different elements together, and he used foam tape to build dimension throughout the scene.

I especially like the way he handled the pumpkins and apples in the background. He wanted those elements to bring in more of that autumn feeling, but didn't want them competing with the couple, so he left them black and white. That keeps the colorful figures in the foreground while still giving the scene plenty of seasonal detail.

Hide, Layer, and Rearrange

Walter also used his paper goods in a very intentional way. He didn't want the cut-off torsos of the figures to show, so he fussy cut pumpkins and florals and layered them over those areas. That also created the perfect spot for the Retro Gratitude STAMPcut to sit.

It's a great example of why you don't have to use paper goods exactly as they come. You can cut out individual elements, layer them over one another, use one piece to conceal another, and rearrange everything until the scene works the way you want it to.

And while this card does involve quite a bit of fussy cutting, Walter happens to enjoy that part of the process. His attention to those little details is what makes the finished scene feel so cohesive.

A Cheerful Celebration of Gratitude with Walter

Some combinations just seem to belong together. STAMPfella Walter brought together several STAMPlorations paper goods pieces to create this cheerful fall card, and the result is full of color, layering, and dimension.

Layer Paper Goods to Build a Scene

Walter used a Thank You Card Front, two Hello Fall Journaling Cards, and a Retro Gratitude STAMPcut to create his layered design. The pieces work beautifully together, not only because of their fall-inspired colors, but also because they share the same feeling of gratitude and joy.

The card front provides the perfect background, while the layered journaling cards build the scene in front of it. Walter especially loved the peaceful little village in one of the pieces, using it as the backdrop for the colorful floral lady. The large Retro Gratitude STAMPcut brings the sentiment to the foreground and ties the whole design together.

There is plenty of dimension here, too. Walter used foam tape between the layers to give the individual elements more depth and make the scene feel almost like a little paper collage.

One of the things I love about this card is how easily the different pieces come together to tell a story. You don't have to start with a blank piece of cardstock and build every element yourself. words that matter | HOPE + Ethereal Faces with Walter

Sometimes a sentiment doesn't just give you the words for a card. It gives you the idea for the entire card.

That's exactly what happened when Walter worked with Simple Expressions: HOPE and Ethereal Faces card fronts. 

One card turns the meaning of the sentiment into a powerful visual metaphor, while the other takes a simpler approach to emphasize the message.

Beautifully Put Back Together

Walter says this first card is his absolute favorite, and I can see why. When he read the Don't Give Up Hope sentiment, his mind immediately turned to kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold. He tore an Ethereal Faces card front into a few pieces and then glued it all back together onto a thin piece of paper. 

He used an embossing ink pen to add ink to the cracks, then dusted the panel with gold embossing powder and heat set it. The result is a kintsugi-inspired card where the gold cracks become part of the design. And the message takes on an even deeper meaning: don't give up hope because life may be beautifully put back together.

Keep Hope at the Center

For his second card, Walter used fussy cutting, layered colors, and stamping to create a simple but beautiful design that emphasizes the need to maintain hope. The expressive face and floral elements create a strong focal point, while the bold HOPE sentiment reinforces the message. There's no need to overcomplicate the design when the word itself carries so much meaning.

Creative Takeaway

Walter's two cards are a great reminder to let the meaning of your sentiment influence your design. Instead of choosing a sentiment after you've already figured out the rest of the card, try starting with the words. What does the sentiment make you think of? Is there a visual idea, a memory, a feeling, or even a story that you can turn into the card?

For Walter, Don't Give Up Hope immediately brought kintsugi to mind, and that connection completely changed how he used the Ethereal Faces card front. The result isn't just a card with a hopeful message. The design itself helps tell the story.

Today we're showcasing Perfect Pairs: Blooms & Sunshine with two beautiful cards by STAMPfella Walter.

The coordinating ephemera cuts in this bundle do a lot of the work for you. With their vibrant florals and variety of styles, you can keep things simple or add a few extra details to create something more layered and dimensional.

For his first card, Walter used the tag ephemera cuts to create a fun dimensional border along the bottom of the card panel. He stamped the coordinating paint/ink splatter background stamp with gold metallic pigment ink and added the "Sending You Sunshine" sentiment in brown. A generous amount of grunge gives the card a vintage feel and ties all the elements together. The result is a warm, layered design that lets the colorful floral ephemera take center stage.

For his second card, Walter kept things simple with a pretty focal arrangement. He used one of the floral ephemera cuts with the Curly Labels/Tags die and added a paper doily from his stash for a little extra detail. The soft pink background and gold accents complement the florals beautifully, while the "Sending You Sunshine" sentiment finishes the card without competing with the focal image.

A beautiful winter card doesn't have to be complicated. Sometimes, the right combination of images is enough to create an entire scene.

For his first card, Walter let the Serene Winter ephemera cuts do most of the storytelling. The pinecones, winter bird, and birdhouse come together to create a cozy outdoor winter scene. To give the card a snowy-sky feel, he applied three shades of blue ink to the background using a baby wipe, then used a pouncer brush and white pigment ink to help blend the colors together. He finished with the coordinating sentiment stamped in silver metallic pigment ink. The result is a soft winter background that supports the detailed ephemera without competing with it.

Creative takeaway: When your focal pieces already tell a story, you don't need to build a complicated background. Create just enough atmosphere to support the scene, then let the ephemera do the rest.

Keep It Simple and Let the Details Shine

Walter took an even simpler approach with his second card, intentionally keeping the design clean to highlight the beautiful ephemera cuts. A white glitter cardstock background provides a subtle touch of sparkle, while a blue border frames the design. The snow globe and winter skates become the stars of the card, with the coordinating Winter Wishes sentiment completing the scene. There's something especially effective about giving detailed pieces plenty of breathing room. The simplicity of the card allows us to appreciate all the little details in the artwork.

Creative takeaway: Don't assume you need to fill every bit of your card. Sometimes a simple background and a few carefully chosen focal pieces are all you need to make the artwork stand out.

wall art inspiration | Walter's urban mural collage

One of my favorite things about Walter's projects is that he rarely uses paper goods the way you might expect. Instead of treating them as individual elements, he layers and combines them into something entirely new.

For today's project, Walter transformed four Paper Goods VIP Subscription selections into an eye-catching mixed media collage inspired by urban wall murals. It's the kind of artwork that looks as though it belongs on the side of a brick building, where layers of paint, posters, and street art tell their own story.

Building an Urban Wall Mural

Walter selected these August Paper Goods VIP Subscription products:

He began by fussy-cutting elements from each collection and arranging them into a collage on an A2-sized cardstock panel. After adhering everything with collage paste, he embossed the entire panel using a brick embossing folder, instantly transforming the collage into a textured brick wall.

To finish the piece, Walter blended Distress Inks (Lost Shadow, Hickory Smoke, Weathered Wood, and Antique Linen), added white paint splatter, and sealed everything with a layer of collage medium. The result is wonderfully textured and convincingly resembles a weathered mural painted directly onto an old brick wall.

Creative Takeaway

One of the easiest ways to stretch your paper crafting supplies is to stop thinking of paper goods as finished pieces. Walter shows how combining several collections can create something completely original. A card front becomes street art. Ephemera becomes architectural detail. An embossing folder changes a flat collage into a realistic brick wall.

For this project, Walter combined products from four different paper goods collections:

Each one brings something different to the design: The Retro People ATC becomes the focal point. The Junk Journal Collage Card Front provides the vintage foundation. The Analog Grunge Paper adds layers of colorful texture, while the hand-colored flowers from the Color Me Blooms Colorables soften the bold graphic look with a touch of nature.

The Finishing Touches

Walter added the Clustered Hearts CUTplorations die and a sentiment from the A Full Heart stamp set to complete the design. The dimensional heart sentiment reinforces the card's theme, while a few clear embellishments add just the right amount of sparkle without distracting from the colorful collage. Little details like these help tie the entire composition together.

A Card Full of Personality

One of my favorite things about this project is how every layer has its own purpose.

• The vintage papers create texture.
• The bright colors add energy.
• The hand-colored flowers ground the design.
• And the retro illustration immediately draws your eye to the center of the card.

Despite combining so many different elements, the finished piece feels balanced and cohesive.

Hello, friends! We are so excited to share a gorgeous project from the talented Walter Zemrock today. He has put together a stunning, vintage-inspired creation using elements from his July Paper Goods VIP subscription package, and it is full of beautiful texture and story-telling details.

Walter designed a fun vintage Triple Tag Card Fun Fold Card that stands up beautifully to display its dimensional layers. The project perfectly blends a variety of textures and illustrations to tell the sweet story of a woman, a man, and good times spent together.

For this design, Walter combined several items from his July Paper Goods picks:

• Analog Grunge Paper and Junk Journal Collage A2 Card Fronts provide the perfect layered, text-filled vintage backgrounds.

• Retro People ATC feature the striking vintage portraits of the man on the left and the woman on the right.

• Color Me Spring Blooms Colorables adds a beautiful pop of soft pink floral color right down the center panel.

To finish off the construction and sentiment, he used the Curly Labels/Tags Nesting Dies to frame the panels and the gold-toned Good Times Die split across the left and right tags. The finished card measures 5.25” wide by 5.25” high when collapsed, designed to fit perfectly into a 5x7 envelope.
