Creative Tip of the Day | Layer Your Stamping Over a Printed Background

Some cards look like they took hours to create, but they're really built from a handful of thoughtful layers.

Today's beautiful card by STAMPgirl Jane is a perfect example. She started with our Spring Florals A2 Card Front, then added a few stamped flowers around the edges, die cut a bold "Thanks" sentiment, and finished it with a beautifully colored butterfly.

The result feels rich and detailed, but each layer has a purpose -- and none of them compete for attention.

How to Get the Look

Start with a patterned or printed background that already does some of the design work for you.

Instead of covering it up, stamp a few coordinating images so they extend beyond the edges of the printed design. Jane stamped several flowers from It's A Girl Thing: Sunshine, colored them, cut them out, and layered them around the floral background to make the design feel larger than the original print.

Finish with one bold focal element -- in this case, the glittery "Thanks" die cut -- and a butterfly to anchor the lower corner.

Why We Love It

  • It adds depth without adding bulk.
  • Layered stamped images make a printed background feel custom.
  • Repeating similar floral shapes ties everything together while keeping the eye moving around the card.

Creative Takeaway

The next time you reach for a patterned paper or card front, don't think of it as the finished background. Think of it as the first layer.

A few coordinating stamped images placed around the edges can make it feel like you created the entire scene yourself.

Discover what's possible by combining your favorite stamped images with our Paper Goods to create layered designs that look intricate but come together with surprisingly little effort.

{New Paper Goods!} Newsprint Coffee Ephemera Tiles

Hey, STAMPfriends! We're back with another post about one of the paper goods we recently added to the store. We've got card fronts, colorables, and ephemera, and mind you, these aren't your ordinary paper goods -- they're some of the most gorgeous designs professionally printed on 120# (325 gsm) matte white cardstock.

The STAMPgirls have been playing with these for a while now and they all love the quality of both design and paper. I've also gotten a lot of great feedback from customers who love the thickness of the cardstock.

It's only been a couple of months since I introduced our paper goods but already we have a growing catalog. In fact, just this month, I added 14 new products to our paper goods section: three (3) A2 card fronts, six (6) ephemera tiles, and five (5) ATC/journaling cards.

Over the next few weeks, you will be seeing the STAMPgirls share projects that feature our paper goods -- they're here to give you ideas on how you can use the products creatively in your own projects.

Earlier this week, you had a look at Tanja's projects that featured the Gingerbread Ephemera Tiles. This time around, Jane is sharing projects she created using the Newsprint Coffee Ephemera Tiles. Each square tile is 1.75" inches and there are 6 tiles in each sheet -- for a total of 36 tiles (6 of each design) in a pack. There's plenty to make a couple dozen cards and projects out of just one pack.

Take a look at Jane's makes. We've got tons of coffee-themed products and they work very well with the ephemera tiles.
