Here's Tiffany with her project:

Welcome! I'm so excited to share this fun mixed media tutorial with you. I started out using an old hymnal and doing an art journal page in it using stencils, Distress Oxide inks, Tombow dual brush pens, and a white Posca paint pen. Hymnals or other old books are great for art journaling. Not only are you upcycling something that's going unused but, it also eliminates the intimidation of starting with a blank white page.

For this page, I started with the Butterfly Prints stencil and Distress Oxides in "peacock feathers" and "squeezed lemonade".

Holding the stencil firmly down on the hymnal page, I applied the inks through the stencil with a sponge applicator, alternating the yellow and teal colors.

After covering the part of the page where the stencil is set, lift the stencil and move it over to the blank portion of the page. Line it up with the pattern already inked and continue applying ink through the stencil around the page until the hymnal page has a completed colorful background.

For the next layer, I grabbed my teal Tombow dual brush pen and white fine point Posca paint pen.

Using the teal brush pen, I lettered the word "glory" on top of the butterfly background. Use basic cursive lettering, and just make the down stroke wider or thicker than the up stroke to give it a calligraphy type look.

I used the white posca paint pen to outline the letters to make them stand out from the background a bit.

I also added some white dashes and dots inside the letters for some added interest.

Using the Make Marks 3 stencil and black ink, I added some cross marks for added contrast and interest.

With the fine end of a black Tombow dual brush pen, I added lines to the right sides of the letters for a "shadow" to add dimension.

And here's the finished page in all of its "glory".

I hope you enjoyed this step-by-step tutorial and that it will encourage you to break out all your goodies and start creatively playing.

See you next month for another mixed media tutorial!
