The Technique: Softening the Negative Space
Instead of leaving the areas under the stencil crisp white, Maria toned them down after removing the stencil. By using the ink already lingering on her brushes, she created a soft, hazy background that bridges the gap between the bold pattern and the card base.
How to Get the Look
Why We Love It
- Stencil Your Pattern: Secure the Almost Shattered stencil and blend three colors through it, moving from left to right to create a smooth transition.
- Remove the Stencil: Once your pattern is complete, take the stencil off the cardstock.
- The "Leftover" Blend: Using the ink still remaining on your brushes (no need to re-ink!), lightly sweep over the white areas. This adds a hint of color to the background without muddying the main pattern.
- Define the Edges: Finish by inking around the outside edges of the panel for a classic, framed look.
- Finish the Layout: Maria added a sentiment from the What's Up ephemera tiles, green enamel dots, and a thin striped border.
Why We Love It
Subtle Depth: It creates a cohesive look where the pattern feels like it's part of the paper rather than just sitting on top.
Waste Not: It’s a great way to use every last bit of ink on your brushes.
Vintage Vibe: Inking the edges adds that beautiful, classic handmade touch we all love.
