Creative Tip of the Day: Spot Coloring with Selective Die Cutting

Welcome back to our series where we revisit classic projects from our talented design team! Whether you're a long-time fan or a new follower, these bite-sized tips are designed to spark your creativity and help you get the most out of your STAMPlorations supplies.

Today, we're looking at a stunning clean and simple card by Monika Skinner. She demonstrates how a small focused area of color can make a massive impact against a black-and-white background.

The Technique: Spot Coloring on Die Cuts

Instead of coloring an entire stamped scene, try "spot coloring" only the portion of the image that falls within a die-cut shape. By leaving the surrounding images in classic black and white, you draw the eye directly to your sentiment and featured artwork.

How to Get the Look

1️⃣ Stamp your large floral image hanging from the top and side of your card base using black ink.

2️⃣ Die cut a tag or panel from a separate piece of white cardstock.

3️⃣ Place the die-cut tag over your card base, lining it up exactly where you want your focal point. Stamp the floral image again so it perfectly aligns with the pattern on the base.

4️⃣ Stamp your sentiment onto the bottom of the tag.

5️⃣ Use markers or watercolors to color only the flowers on the tag. Add a soft ink-blended background behind the colored images to make them stand out.

6️⃣ Adhere the tag to your card base using foam tape for added dimension.

Why We Love It

✨ Saves time by focusing your coloring efforts on a small area.

✨ Creates a professional, layered look with minimal supplies.

✨ Provides a high-contrast effect that makes the colors look more vibrant.

✨ Perfectly frames your sentiment without crowding the card.
