{Spotlight Project} Shirley Creates A Sweet Trio

Hi peeps!  We're still waiting for summer in my neck of the woods, despite the longest day being only twelve days away.  So I thought I'd dream about summery colours and treats while I'm waiting.

I've got to confess, the kickstarter for this project was a colour scheme that I'd seen AmyT use on some cards using Distress Oxides.  Whilst I'll whip out my Distress Inks at the drop of a hat, I have to remind myself to use the Oxides - or in this case, be prompted by seeing someone else's beautiful creations.

So I set about making myself some blended backgrounds, starting with the colour scheme that Amy had used (you can see which colours I used on each card on the individual photos further down).  My plan was to create two of each blend combination and then turn one the opposite way so that I had reverse order.

Once I'd blended the backgrounds I did some tone-on-tone stamping with the words from the Sweet Cravings STAMP Club set.  Despite careful and heavy inking of the stamps, the first impression was barely noticeable, but I re-inked and carried on with the next one, which was better.  Then I accidentally inked up the wrong colour next, so I stamped it off on scrap paper, and I liked the look of the jumbled words, and realised I could rescue the faint stamping on my first panel by treating that as the second generation, and overstamp with first generation, which worked, yay!

I worked my way through the blended panels,

stamping each section the words over each colour section.

Disappointingly, as the words dried they disappeared into the backgrounds (particularly the Tattered Rose), so I applied heat with the craft tool and was delighted to find that the words dried chalky, giving a kind of watermark.  It's difficult to see in the photos, but when the light catches the chalkiness you can see the words easily.

The panel on the left has been dried, the one on the right hasn't.

Then it was a case of stamping out some images from the Sweet Cravings set, colouring with matching Distress Inks, fussy cutting (there are matching dies) and adding diecut words.  This first one uses the colour scheme that Amy had used.

Can't resist a bit of Picked Raspberry ;)

Watermelon - or strawberry and mint?  Your choice!

  1. What a great technique - I have Distress inks and one grey oxide - that is all - you did a fabulous job here - yummy treats too! TFS

  2. Wonderful backgrounds. I, too, am guilty of not using my distress oxides enough. Now I have to go and check out the colours I have (I did not allow myself to buy all of the sets). Love the muted colours and the subtle background stamping.
