{Spotlight Project} Karola Fills a Box with Cake

[Note: This month and next, we have several STAMPlorations girls guest designing and joining the regular Spotlight Project girls and sharing more awesome step-by-step projects that feature our 5x7 stamp club sets. We hope you get even more inspired!]

Hello fellow crafters, Karola here to tempt you with sweet treats using the Sweet Cravings set. Today I will show you how easy it is to make a sweet birthday box card. Many companies have dies you can use to create a box card but it's really easy to create one in any custom size you want using nothing but a pencil, a ruler and a pair of scissors.

I created my box to a size where I could use the rectangle die included in the Tag O' Coffee die set to cut the panels for the sides and flaps of the box. You can see the measurements for the box in the image below - the solid lines are for cutting and the dotted lines are for folding. Once you have mastered how the box comes together you can change the size of the basic design to make it higher, lower, wider or narrower to fit any size you need.

This is what the box looks like once cut and pencil lines are erased.

Fold where the dotted lines were in the image above and you will end up with the below. Then all you need to do is add glue or double-sided tape to the little flap and assemble into a box-shape. I like to leave one of the sides unfolded to form the back of the box, but you could fold down all four flaps of the box if you preferred.

Cut two strips of card, 1" wide and 3.5" long. Fold the last half inch at each end in opposite directions (for attaching to the box). This is what they will look like, you can trim off a bit of the folded end of the flaps like I did if you want to but they will work just as well without.

Attach the strips to the box using glue or double-sided tape to form little shelves your cakes will be sitting on. The engineering part of the project is now done, and we can focus on the more creative aspects of cake boxes. Well done!

Next, create a beautiful piece of colourful card to cover the box with. I took half an A4 sheet of white card, inked with lots of bright Distress Oxides and splattered heavily with water. This is what it ended up looking like.

I used the die to cut out panels for the sides and flaps of the box. If you don't have a die, just fussy cut them a bit smaller than the pieces of the box you are covering. I also fussy cut a larger panel for the back of the box. DO NOT attach any panels you want to stamp on until you have done the stamping. It's a lot harder once the panels are attached to the box. Ask me why I know this...

Next, stamp delicious pieces of cake and pie onto white card using waterproof ink, and colour with Distress Oxides and a water brush, or any other medium of choice.

Add as much cake as you can to your box. I used sentiments from the Sweet Cravings set and inked up the Bold Sentiments: Sweet stamp using Distress markers to create a rainbow coloured sentiment which I covered in Ice Stickles. There you go, you have a delicious box full of cake to send to someone special for their birthday! It folds flat so you can pop it in an envelope.
